The South Dakota Unified Judicial System provides this website on the Internet for your convenience. We hope you find the resources and information contained herein to be useful in familiarizing yourself with the roles and responsibilities of a juror. Juror Instructions and Information

The following are the most frequent questions people ask about their jury service. Any other questions should be addressed to the Jury Coordinator, Pennington County Courthouse, 315 St. Joseph Street, P.O. Box 230, Rapid City, South Dakota, 57709 or you may also call (605) 394-2575.

Location

The Pennington County Courthouse is located at 315 St. Joseph Street, at the intersection of Fourth Street and St. Joseph Street in downtown Rapid City.

Jury Term

Jury Service is usually for one (1) month. Your term is printed on the Juror Summons. However, you will have to appear only periodically during the term. When you are required to appear, court will normally be in session from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. (Noon) and 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., unless otherwise instructed. It is possible to get your term changed under certain circumstances. To do so, you must notify the Juror Coordinator immediately. No changes can be made once your final reporting instruction letter has been received.

Reporting Instructions

You will receive a letter about one week prior to your term of service with instructions on our phone-in procedure (see below) and notification of the specific jury panel to which you have been assigned.

Phone in Procedure

The Circuit Court for Pennington County uses a "phone-in" system to inform jurors when their services will be required. The purpose is to avoid both unnecessary inconvenience to the juror and cost to the taxpayers. For this reason, you are asked to call 394-5123 or 394-6149 every Friday after 6:00 p.m. The recorded message will instruct you regarding your required attendance for the following week. It will indicate date and time to report. If your attendance is required on a specific day, you should call in again the night before (after 6:00 p.m.) to make sure the trial has not been cancelled. Please listen to the entire message and follow all instructions.

Parking

You will receive a parking pass for free parking along with your reporting instructions. Please keep this in the lower left-hand side of your windshield so that you do not get a ticket. Parking is available in the lot located directly behind the courthouse, the lot located by the jail, and in any of the parking spaces around the courthouse.

Reporting An Absence

If illness or emergency prevents your attendance, please call the 394-2575 as near to 8 a.m. as possible. Please advise the Jury Coordinator, in advance of any vacation time or other planned absences that may interfere with jury duty.

Employer Information

Please notify your employer(s) immediately of your designated Jury Term so that any possible scheduling difficulties can be worked out. You will NOT be released from jury duty for work purposes.

Security

The Seventh Judicial Circuit Court and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office reminds you that you will be entering through a security screening process upon entering the Pennington County Courthouse. It is illegal to bring knives or weapons into the courthouse. To avoid delay, leave all pocketknives, multi-tool pliers, chemical pepper spray, and other weapons or unneeded items in your car. We realize that this security screening process will pose a slight inconvenience to you. However, the metal detectors and security personnel will provide a safer environment, which benefits you and all others who enter the courthouse.
